Vietnam Partners provides investment management services through its joint venture with the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV).

BIDV – Vietnam Partners Investment Management Company (BVIM)

Vietnam Partners and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), one of the largest State-owned banks of Vietnam, formed a partnership in 2006 building a 50-50 joint venture, BIDV – Vietnam Partners Investment Company (BVIM). BVIM is focused on mobilizing capital from Vietnam and international markets and investing in high-growth opportunities in strategic sectors of the Vietnamese economy. The Company initiated its first fund, a domestic fund, Vietnam Investment Fund (VIF), in March 2006, and its second fund, a global fund, Vietnam Investment Fund II (VIF II), in March 2008.

BVIM is governed by a Board of Directors including leadership from Vietnam Partners and BIDV, plus Independent Director, Dr. Charles Ellis. Dr. Ellis is a well-known leader in the global investment business and has served as Chairman and Governor of the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR), and as the Chair of the CFA Institute. He has authored several books on investment strategies, was the Founder and Managing Partner of Greenwich Associates, and has taught at Harvard Business School and Yale School of Management.

Vietnam Investment Fund (VIF)

The investment goal of VIF is to generate superior returns by investing in the private and public markets within Vietnam. Closed in March 2007 at US$94.7 million (VND1.5 trillion), VIF is the largest domestic fund raised to-date in Vietnam. Many of the fund's investors are large State-owned corporations or foremost public companies, including: Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, Song Da Corporation, Saigontourist, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, FPT, and Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation. Development Bank of Japan Inc. and Sumitomo Corporation are among a few foreign investors of VIF. 

Investment areas of VIF include:

  • Traditional private equity
  • Equitization of State-owned enterprises
  • Strategic purchases of listed or OTC traded companies
  • Others

VIF has the following distinguished advantages:

  • As a domestic fund, it is not restricted by foreign investment limitations.
  • VIF offers the opportunity to invest alongside many of Vietnam’s largest State-owned enterprises, private corporations, and other entities.
  • VIF is managed by an investment team comprised of seasoned managers with significant experience in Vietnam’s economic expansion.

Vietnam Investment Fund II (VIF II)

VIF II is a new investment vehicle designed for foreign investors to capitalize on opportunities in the fast growing Vietnamese economy. VIF II had an initial closing in March 2008 at US$42 million. 

VIF II pursues a similar investment strategy as VIF but with an emphasis on private equity transactions.
